AMD launches its most advanced desktop CPUs

Today AMD launches first two 7000X3D processors for high-end gaming systems.

AMD 16-core and 12-core desktop CPUs equipped with 3D V-Cache are now on sale. Those are the latest Zen4 “Raphael” series equipped with an 64MB cache placed on top of one chiplet. But since the Ryzen 9 series with more than 8 cores, two chiplets are used – one without the extra cache. A special software solution has been developed by AMD that should mitigate any potential performance disadvantages associated with using two different chiplets in one package.

The Ryzen 9 7950X3D is a 16-core CPU with a total of 144MB of combined L2 and L3 cache. This processor will have a max boost clock up to 5.7 GHz (only for the CCD without 3D V-Cache), but also a much lower TDP (120W). The independent reviews have shown that AMD Ryzen 7000X3D indeed has really good power efficiency in gaming.

Today AMD is also releasing its 12-core Ryzen 9 7900X3D. Not only does this processor have fewer cores, it will also be 100 MHz slower than flagship X3D part. Unfortunately, AMD was somewhat not eager to distribute 7900X3D sample to the press, so the performance of this SKU is a bit of a mystery.

The new 7000X3D CPU launched today at $699 and $599 respectively. The $699 price point is the original MSRP for 7950X, while $599 is $50 more than original 7900X price. However, both parts are heavily discounted to $574 and $448 at this moment.

Next month AMD is launching its third X3D part, the 8-core Ryzen 7 7800X3D. This CPU based on only one chiplet with 3D cache should offer the best gaming performance from all Ryzen 7000 CPUs. This was demonstrated by some reviewers who made proper simulations.
